A few things to know
Setup, updates & everyday use.
I installed the earlier ZIP. How do I switch?
Open chrome://extensions and choose Remove on your manually loaded 2LDW extension. Then install 2LDW from the Chrome Web Store using the button on this page and refresh YouTube. Keeping only one copy prevents duplicate buttons.
The store version receives Chrome’s automatic extension updates. Your saved summary links stay the same.
Which videos and devices work?
Use desktop Chrome on Windows, Mac, or Linux. The button appears on regular YouTube videos and live-video pages; Shorts have a compact 2LDW button in their action rail. Chrome on phones and tablets doesn’t run this desktop extension.
New summaries require accessible captions with at least 500 words. Some Shorts are too short, and private videos or videos without available captions can’t be summarized from their URL. No video download or audio transcription is performed.
Why can’t I see the button?
Refresh the YouTube tab after installing. Check that 2LDW is enabled in chrome://extensions and allowed to run on YouTube. Open an individual video, exit fullscreen, and wait for its action controls to load. The button stays hidden on the homepage, in fullscreen, and when supported controls aren’t available.
If a YouTube layout change causes a problem, email support with your Chrome version and a description of the issue. Don’t send private account details.
Is it free? Why might a summary have to wait?
The extension is free. New summaries use 2LDW’s normal security checks, request limits, and processing queue. They may be temporarily unavailable when processing is offline or the queue is full. Existing saved summaries remain readable.
How do I update or remove it?
Chrome handles updates for the Web Store version automatically. Refresh YouTube after an update if you still see the previous button. To disable or uninstall it, open chrome://extensions and turn off 2LDW or choose Remove.
Transcript import and the manual download?
Version 1.1.0 adds browser transcript import and is being submitted for Google review. The store may still serve 1.0.1 until approval. Imported sources are clearly labeled and work without the worker downloading captions. For manual setup, download version 1.1.0, extract it to a permanent folder, then open chrome://extensions, enable Developer mode, and choose Load unpacked. Select the folder containing manifest.json and refresh YouTube.
Manual copies need manual updates: replace their files, click Reload on the extension card, and refresh YouTube. Verification checksum.
